| Description: | some vipers have pits, such as the rattlesnake above. these snakes are restricted to the new world. they are found mostly in eastern, western, and southern north america, but also in africa. in the picture, you will notice between the tongue and eye is a nostril like hole, or pit. these heat sensind device make any thing warm (ie. any mammals, including the small rodents on which they prey) stand out, they rely on these pits so much, they are known to strike at warm light bulbs! All pit vipers are dangerous at least a little to humans, from the saw scaled viper--usually only using dried venom, to the mohave rattlesnake, almost matching venom potency with the cobras. all pit vipers are nocturnal, and most have keeled (ridged) scales. rattle snakes will brumate, or hibernate, in large groups duing the winter seasons under ground. then when spring comes they mate. |
