Matgorda Island special four: Kingsnakes!
Description:Kingsnakes are some of the most diverse and common noth american snakes. The come in so many shapes and sizes. For example, most people think that milksnakes are their own species (shown above), but they are kingsnakes. Most Kings get to about five feet long and up to 2 inches in diameter. They eat mice, fish, and the occasional bird. These colubrids range from california to new mexico to Florida. Many of these mimic the deadly coral snake because predators have learned to avoid them, but are harmless beyond a non-venomous bite. Their common name comes from the fact that they eat other snakes. Some are even venomous! They have built up an immunity to certain viperid venoms, such as one prey item: rattlesnakes
