Basic Coulubrids
| Description: | Colubrid snakes are sometimes referred to as "typical snakes". They comprise the largest family by far with over 2800 species worldwide. Most are medium sized snakes, and all lack a ceratin pelvic bone and have no vestigial hind limbs and whose left lung is either gone or greatly reduced. A common Natricinae is the family of water snakes and also the garter snake family. Both subfamilies contain over 200 genera, or subfamilies. The Colubrinae subfamily includes two of the genera popular with herpenthusiasts, Elaphe and Lampropeltis. With a family this large, there will always be disagreements about classification, especially regarding the numbers and types of subspecies. There are a few colubrids that have mildly venomous rear fangs, but they are so non-toxic, they present no danger to humans whatsoever. the Boomslang is the only dangerous to humans colubrid. |
